Commuters aren't the only ones feeling the heat, the brutal weather is also taking a toll on roadways and rails across Long Island.Rising temperatures can be rough on the trains and the tracks that get them to work. Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) spokesman Sam Zambuto says in heat, the steel rails expand. He says LIRR officials must make sure alignment doesn?t become a problem and engineers must ride the trains to scan for any rails bending out of place. The LIRR isn't the only form of transportation that gets special safety checks. Roadways have a fair share of problems as well, including buckling. Department of Transportation officials, however, say they are ready and waiting to handle any problems that arise.
