Brooklyn Hospital Center broke ground Wednesday on a state-of-the-art emergency department.
The hospital's emergency department was initially designed to see approximately 45,000 visitors a year. But today, they see more than 75,000.
Hospital officials say there biggest challenge has always been space, but that's all about to change.
The department will have new triage, exam and treatment rooms, including a rapid assessment treatment area. It will also feature new computer systems, radiology equipment and nurse stations.
Officials say the last renovation was in the 1990s, so this one was much needed.
The emergency department will remain open during construction. It's expected to be completed in early 2021.
