A group of activists protested Wednesday what it says is a recent pattern of police misconduct.
The activists are calling for Gov. David Paterson to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate cases of alleged police brutality.
?What?s the sense in having people of color in powerful positions if they can?t transform relations between police and communities,? says Councilman Charles Barron, referring to the governor.
Rod Starz, of the hip-hop group Rebel Diaz, alleges that he and his brother were roughed up in June by officers after trying to help a Bronx street vendor. The brothers claim things got violent after they started writing down officers? badge numbers.
?I feel there?s a lot of aggression when they see that their dirty practices are being exposed,? Starz says.
The governor?s office says it is reviewing the group's proposal. Efforts to reach the NYPD were unsuccessful.
