Prosecutors say a Bronx man who was stopped by authorities at JFK International Airport was trying to join the Taliban.
Delowar Muhammad Hossian appeared before a federal judge Friday after being arrested for attempting to join the group.
The Bronx native was charged with attempted provision of material support and resources for terrorism. This means he's accused of attempting to give the Taliban weapons and communication equipment.
According to prosecutors, Hossian had been under surveillance since 2018, when he was allegedly talking about his plan to an FBI informant. During one conversation, Hossian told the informant "I want to kill some kufars (non-believers) before I die."
He attempted to fly Friday to Afghanistan, but was stopped by the FBI and arrested.
Hossian is a U.S. citizen who was born in Bangladesh.
