School officials, parents and other residents attended a community meeting in Brentwood Monday to address gun violence, gang activity and overall crime.
Brandon Garcia, a high school senior, says he and his fellow students were confused and frightened last Friday when officials placed the school on lockdown due to a shooting nearby.
Police arrested 16-year-old Carlos Argueta in connection with that crime, which left a 22-year-old wounded in the abdomen after a dispute. Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang related.
Brentwood school officials say students inside the school were never in danger during that incident, but announced stepped up security measures anyway.
They include random searches of students and a handheld metal detector.
Mia Vargas, who has a freshman daughter at the school, says school security needs an even greater boost.
"We have 19,000 kids in our district," Vargas says. "If we are doing random checks, I think it's important that we try to get additional detectors."
