Thrashing winds cause downed wires, power outages across Long Island

Whipping winds across the region have caused power problems for hundreds and damage ranging from fallen branches to sizable fires.
Howling winds were almost impossible to avoid on Long Island Monday, with gusts up into the 30s and 40s.
For some, the problems didn't go further than tree branches strewn about, but for others the damage was notable.
Video shows a vehicle engulfed in flames in West Babylon Monday morning. Suffolk police say it was the result of power lines falling on the car.
In Syosset, Nassau police sent out a travel advisory asking drivers to avoid Underhill Boulevard between Willis Lane and Woodcrest Drive due to downed poles and wires. That has since been cleared.
Crews from PSEGLI were also seen working on power lines in Saddle Rock. According to the utility, the total number of customers experiencing outages Monday afternoon stood at just over 1,000.
