Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the co-op management company that owns the Elmont building from which hundreds of seniors were evacuated due to Friday's flooding.
The county executive was joined by seniors from the Foster Meadow Lane Co-op who still cannot go back home. He says he is suing the company, Woods and Ruff, because it refused multiple requests from the county to make necessary repairs.
Blakeman says repeated requests to the management company have been ignored so he wants the courts to force a response.
Residents of the building also say they have had issues for years with flooding and that nothing is changing.
“We’ve been here before, there’s been flooding in the building,” says Michelle Wilkinson, whose mother lives in the building. “She’s been here for 10 years and there’s been flooding in the building ongoing for several of those years, so we’re ready to have this situation resolved.”
The co-op was condemned by the Town of Hempstead following Tropical Storm Ida. Residents could not return home for weeks because of flood damage.
The Nassau County fire marshal tells News 12 there have been a “litany of violations” over the last two years, including a current outstanding violating from Friday’s flooding, which damaged the fire alarm system and control panel.
There are around 30 residents who still cannot return home.
“I’ll be glad when I get back into my space,” says Zula Brown, of Elmont.
News 12 reached out to Woods and Ruff about the lawsuit and residents’ concerns, but have not heard back.
