A teenager from Saint James has recovered from a brain tumor thanks to a groundbreaking surgery.

Blakely Murphy, 15, had a tumor removed back in 2009. Her new tumor, however, was located in a particularly delicate part of the brain.

Dr. Steven Schneider performed a 10-and-a-half-hour surgery on Blakely using NICO BrainPath. The new technology allows surgeons to avoid disturbing areas of the brain that affect functions like speech and motor skills. Blakely was awake for the entire procedure, responding to doctor's requests for actions like smiling, speaking and moving her hands.

"That allows us to go where we couldn't really go before," says Schneider.

Blakely was able to go home just 23 hours after the surgery.
