Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Tuesday that he will tap Assistant Deputy County Executive for Public Safety Timothy Sini as the next police commissioner.
Sini will begin his transition as deputy commissioner Wednesday, and will work alongside outgoing Commissioner Edward Webber until he retires in January.
Webber made his retirement announcement on Monday after 43 years with the Suffolk County Police Department.
Sini recently ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Suffolk Legislature in the 14th District. He touted his credentials as a federal prosecutor under U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.
Sini must be approved by the Suffolk County Legislature before becoming commissioner.
