Beech-Nut nutrition announced the decision to recall its Stage 1, Single Grain Rice Cereal after traces exceeding the Food and Drug Administration's limit of inorganic arsenic were found.
Jason Jacobs, Beech-Nut’s vice president of food safety and quality, says the safety of infants and children is the company’s main concern.
“We are issuing this voluntary recall because we learned through routine sampling by the State of Alaska that a limited quantity of Beech-Nut Single Grain Rice Cereal products had levels of naturally-occurring inorganic arsenic above the FDA guidance level for inorganic arsenic,” says Jacobs.
The recall affects consumers who’ve purchased Stage 1, Single Grain Rice Cereal with a UPC Code #52200034705, expiration date of May 1, 2022 and product codes 103470xxxx, 093470xxxx. These numbers can be found at the bottom of the cereal canister and should be discarded immediately.
Along with issuing the voluntary recall, Beech-Nut has also announced its departure from the market for Beech-Nut-branded Single Grain Rice Cereal.
According to a press release, the company is “concerned about the ability to consistently obtain rice flour well-below the FDA guidance level and Beech-Nut specifications for naturally occurring inorganic arsenic.”
News 12 is told consumers can visit the company’s website or call 1-866-272-9417 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for further information on obtaining exchanges or refunds.
