A man is in critical condition after Nassau police say he suffered head injuries during a reported robbery at a South Hempstead gas station.
Police say officers were called to the BP gas station on Grand Avenue around 5:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of a robbery.
Investigators say a man at the scene suffered head injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Neighbors say the incident is unusual for the area, which they describe as a quiet community.
“I live around here and have used that BP. It’s fine, it doesn’t seem like anything crazy would be going on there,” said Angelik Bell, who lives in South Hempstead. “I just hope everyone involved, the people working at the BP, are ok.”
Police towed a car from the gas station Saturday afternoon as part of the investigation.
Authorities have not said whether anything was stolen or provided details about what led to the reported robbery.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
