A Baldwin High School student was diagnosed with a drug-resistant staph infection dubbed the "super bug" last month, the Nassau County Department of Health confirmed Monday.
Although the student was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on September 21, the health department said it was first notified on Sunday, October 21. The student did not require hospitalization and has since made a full recovery.
No other cases of MRSA have been reported in Baldwin or any other Nassau schools, the department said.
In a statement, acting Health Commissioner Dr. Abby Greenberg said, "The best way to prevent MRSA and other infections is to practice good hygiene." Greenberg also said to "avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages and avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors."
