A day after she was left in a Manhasset hospital, doctors said Baby Jane Doe Hope is doing well Friday.
Michael Piergiovinni, a janitor at North Shore University Hospital, discovered the 1-day-old girl in a bathroom on the labor and delivery floor shortly after 9:30 a.m. Piergiovinni immediately called for medical personnel, who say the baby was cleaned and taken care of in a loving manner.
According to the New York State Safe Haven Law, mothers of unwanted children may leave the baby with a responsible and willing adult, instead of abandoning it. Timothy Jaccard, of the Children of Hope Safe Haven Program, says he received a call from a woman asking of places to anonymously deliver her baby Wednesday night. Hospital officials say the woman ended up giving birth at home. They say she went to the hospital to give the child to the labor and delivery unit, but left the girl in a bathroom when she found the entrance locked.
The newborn girl could leave the hospital in the care of Child and Family Services as soon as Saturday. She will eventually be placed in a foster home. Doctors say she is 20 inches long and weighs 6 pounds and 5 ounces.
