Attorney General William Tong is urging lawmakers to pass legislation to strengthen enforcement against deepfake digital sexual assault.
The proposal would allow victims to take civil action against abusers and platforms. It builds off of a 2015 state law, championed by Tong, that criminalizes the unauthorized dissemination of intimate images in an attempt to harm or harass.
Last year, legislators included digitally created images in the law.
Tong says it's important this legislation passes as there has a proliferation of videos and images that were posted online without consent. Tong adds many of those videos and images feature children and teenagers.
Tong says it's crucial for law enforcement to keep up with new technological threats, including artificial intelligence.
