Arrest made after Marine injured in hit-and-run
Suffolk County police have arrested a man suspected a hitting a Marine from Brightwaters with his car and fleeing the scene.
Police say Marine Cpl. Nathan Valle was jogging along Montauk Highway in Bay Shore around 5 p.m. Wednesday when an eastbound vehicle veered onto the shoulder, struck him and kept going.
A physician and two nurses from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center happened to be nearby and sprang into action.
"I leaned over and got on my knees and just said to him, 'Can you hear me?' And he did open his eyes,"' says nurse Kathleen Cleary.
Valle's father says the Marine suffered a fractured shoulder blade and lacerations to his head. He says his son just came home earlier this month after being stationed in Japan.
Marine Cpl. Valle was scheduled to deploy to North Carolina later this month. He is said to be in stable condition and is expected to leave the hospital in a few days.
On Friday, police arrested 20-year-old Steven Sabato, of West Islip, in connection with the incident. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with physical injury.
Sabato left court Saturday after posting $5,000 bail. His lawyer says “it’s not clear who was driving the vehicle.” He is due back in court on Aug. 8.
Cpl. Valle is ordered to report to his next duty station at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on July 8.
