Animal rescuers set up a pen with food and night vision cameras Friday night in Moriches with hopes to lure
a bull that escaped a farm four days earlier.
They say the night vision cameras will help them see as soon as the 1,500-pound bull goes inside. But nobody knows exactly how long that will take and stressed that patience will be key.
"It's basically just a waiting game at this point," said Frankie Floridia with Strong Island Animal Rescue League.
Floridia has spent the last four days tirelessly searching for the bull who went missing from a Manorville halal farm Tuesday morning. There have been a few sightings since then, but the animal still has not been caught.
"We basically know the area where he is. We're just hoping he's going to come to the trap," Floridia said.
The rescuers also attached an infrared camera which can be viewed remotely to the pen that's stocked with grain and alfalfa. They're hoping the food will lure the bull inside and the camera would then send them an alert.
"The other cameras we have to keep coming back and checking the SD cards. These will be able to notify us when there's movement, when something is going on, so we'll be able to look at our phones," Floridia explained.
Meanwhile, neighbors said they can't understand how the animal is still missing with so many people searching for him. But Floridia said the thick brush is difficult to navigate, so the bull needs to come out of the woods.
"It could happen at any time. He may walk into the trap tonight," he said.
If the animal is caught, the bull will be brought to a sanctuary in New Jersey.
The owner of the sanctuary is staying at a hotel room nearby the area of the search, and he's been keeping a close eye on the pen. He said he'd be ready to load the bull up right away and drive him off to safety once he is caught.
