Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman says the Northeast Corridor will meet the requirement of Positive Train Control by the end of the year.
The Long Island Rail Road also stated Thursday that PTC will be installed and operating within the next two years.
The announcement comes in the wake of the derailment in Philadelphia that claimed eight lives and sent more than 100 people to the hospital Tuesday night.
PTC works with sensors along the track that monitor by computer how fast a train is traveling. If it exceeds the speed limit, the computer will alert the engineer and the train will automatically stop.
Installing PTC on the LIRR and Metro-North will be paid for with a nearly $1 billion loan granted to the MTA by the Federal Railroad Administration.
The MTA insists the new system will not affect fares. They say it will take two more years to implement the complex system.
