The driver police say struck and killed a veteran Suffolk cop in Commack was arraigned on DWI charges and given $75,000 cash bail Monday.
Police say Jose Borbon, 23, was driving drunk early Sunday morning when he slammed into 2nd Precinct Officer Glen Ciano's cruiser at around 4:15 a.m. The cruiser burst into flames, burning it beyond recognition with the 45-year-old officer trapped inside. He was killed.
Ciano, a 22-year veteran of the force, was heading to assist a fellow officer when the crash occurred at the corner of Vanderbilt Parkway and Commack Road.
Police say Borbon, of Plainview, was arrested just one month ago for drunken driving and that he has a criminal history that includes resisting arrest, three license suspensions and five auto accidents. Prosecutors say the charges may be upgraded to homicide after their investigation has been completed.
Ciano leaves behind a wife and two children.
Borbon will be back in court the first week of March.
