The Nassau County police officer accused of being a slumlord skipped another court date Thursday as his lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the charges.
Paul Fuina is accused of illegally renting apartments in Mastic and Shirley. He has denied that he owns the homes. The motion filed Thursday claims the media has turned the case into a feeding frenzy.
"I have been a member of the Nassau County Police Department for over 11 years," the motion reads. "Now all of a sudden I am being charged with Mickey Mouse violations such as engaging in off-duty employment without informing my commanding officer."
Fuina?s lawyer, Michael Kaper, says his client is being harassed, but Mastic neighbors say the police officer is mocking the law.
Nassau police say they are investigating the charges against Fuina and can?t comment. A judge has two weeks to decide whether to dismiss the charges or proceed.
