Officials urge Long Island residents to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. They also recommend limiting outdoor activities for pets.

People with respiratory and heart issues are advised to remain indoors when temperatures peak during the afternoon hours.

Officials also say that anyone who experiences shortness of breath, chest pain or irritation should contact their doctor immediately.
