Driver safety advocates are urging New Jersey lawmakers to pass legislation that would require younger drivers to undergo more driving practice.

If the bill is passed, permit holders under the age of 21 would be required to complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice.

AAA says that a driver under the age of 21 is involved in a crash every 19 minutes in New Jersey.

“Traffic crashes and fatalities are rising at an alarming rate in New Jersey. Requiring new young drivers to log 50 practice hours will not only provide these drivers with the vital experience they need to drive safely and confidently but will result in a reduction of injuries and fatalities on our roads," AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Tracy Noble said in a statement.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that the legislation could reduce collision claims by 13%.
