Immigration advocates are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to make good on his word when it comes to passing the Dream Act.
Dozens rallied outside the governor's Long Island office in Hicksville on Saturday. They are urging Cuomo to keep his promise and continue to support the proposal.
The Dream Act would grant state-funded financial aid to undocumented students who want to go to college. Organizers say the cost of the proposal would amount to $17 million, which is about 2 percent of the total state tuition aid that is put together each year.
The proposal was already voted down twice in the past, but Cuomo said during his election night speech that 2015 would be the year the act is passed. The governor is expected to speak again about his support for the Dream Act in his State of the State Address later this week.
State Sen. Dean Skelos, who also serves as the Republican majority leader, says that he does not support free college tuition for undocumented residents.
