An Adelphi fraternity’s “Hungerfest” event on Saturday collected food for the Island Harvest Food Bank.
Members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity fasted and gathered food donations at six locations across Nassau County.
The purpose of the fast is to give them a glimpse into the eyes of those less fortunate. Fraternity member Jordan Maniscalco said the event is a great way to help people in need.
"Some people aren't as lucky as us that they don't get a dinner or food on their plate every day," Maniscalco said. "This is giving back to the community and helping those in need."
According to the national food bank Feeding America, 228,000 Long Islanders are considered food insecure – 68,000 of them are children. Every $2 donated to this cause helps buy one meal for those fighting hunger every day.
"I feel for these people. I make money, so might as well spread the wealth. Everybody's got to eat. Some people have to make a decision between eating or heating their house because of the economy. So I want to help them out," said Oceanside resident John Boha.
This was Kappa Sigma's 17th Hungerfest and members said that it will not be the last.
"It's a really great feeling. It's something we take pride in and it's something we love to do," Maniscalco added.
Since they began Hungerfest in 2006, the members of Kappa Sigma have collected more than 22,000 pounds of food and raised over $12,000 in contributions to help Island Harvest.
