Robert Waring has been the acting Suffolk police commissioner since January.

The 37-year veteran of the force comes from a long line of first responders.

In 1986, Waring joined the NYPD - 11 months later he would move to the Suffolk Police Department and has been there ever since.

“Lieutenant was the best job I had, I loved it because you’re in the middle – you had management’s perspective and the cop’s perspective," said Waring.

Perhaps the most challenging and rewarding times of Waring's career were when he was working in New York City with the Crime Scene unit following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2000 and as an inspector in the 3rd Precinct when the MS-13 murders plagued the Island.
