A 15-year-old accused of planning an attack on Connetquot High School pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in Central Islip Tuesday.
The teen pleaded guilty to attempted conspiracy, instead of conspiracy, in family court. The suspect's identity is being concealed because he is a minor. His mother, stepfather and biological father were in attendance. All declined comment.
"Everyone is aware of the seriousness of what he pleaded to," defense attorney Robert Gallo said. "No one is making light of this. Hopefully, he'll get the appropriate care he needs."
The teen was remanded to Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center in Dix Hills while he awaits sentencing. He is due back in court August 21.
A number of sentencing options are available for the current charge. The boy could receive probation or could be permanently removed from his home. He could also be hospitalized, placed in a residential treatment center or placed in foster care. Prison is also on the table.
The 15-year-old's alleged accomplice, 17-year-old Michael McDonough, has been charged as an adult in the case. The two are accused of planning to shoot and blow up students and faculty at the school.
