New York City, under a court order, released tapes of calls made to the city's 911 system on the morning of September 11, 2001--in the moments and hours after the attack on the World Trade Center.

Along with those tapes, transcripts of the calls were released on Friday too. The city redacted audio from the tapes of victims calling for help after the attack. The transcripts reflect these redactions as well.

Overall, the audio and written records are largely identical. However when the caller to 911 and the 911 operator are speaking at the same time, the audio is blanked out. On the written transcript the 911 operators comments are published.

Also worth noting is that audio records do not contain an indication of the time the call commenced and ended. That information is not part of the audio record, but is deduced from the counter on the audio file. The time information is incomplete on the audio files. On the transcripts, all calls time information is complete.
