Police say a 6-week-old baby girl was found in a shoebox that had been left on the porch of a home in Brentwood.
Police say a 14-year-old boy heard the baby's cries coming from the rear porch of his family's Washington Avenue home on Thursday around 9 p.m. He went outside and found the baby, who had been wrapped in a blanket and tucked into a shoebox with a bottle of milk.
The boy and his family brought the baby inside and called 911.
The baby was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, and doctors say she is in good health. Child Protective Services has been notified, police say.
Tim Jaccard, of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation, say he wants to make sure that other women realize there are multiple ways to relinquish an infant safely without the fear of arrest or prosecution.
"Under the New York State law, she can go to the hospital, police station or fire station or relinquish the baby to any responsible person," he says.
Jaccard says 14 infants have been safely and legally relinquished through the New York State Safe Haven program this year.
