It was revealed Wednesday in the Thomas Valva murder trial that there was a third adult living in the home at the time leading up to the 8-year-old's death.
Edward Concilio, who is married to Angela Polina's cousin, was living in the basement of 11 Bittersweet Lane several days a week. He was living there because he had a job at MacArthur Airport and was commuting to and from Florida at the time.
Concilio testified that Polina was aggressive with the children and was the disciplinarian.
He said Polina would "often fly off the handle" and a trigger for her was the children's bathroom issues.
Concilio also said he personally witnessed Michael Valva hosing off his son Anthony Valva outside in his underwear.
He says there was one time the father became so angry over an issue with Thomas Valva taking M&Ms that he was yelling, "If he wants to be a perp, I am going to treat him like a perp."
Concilio claims Michael Valva was going to get his NYPD handcuffs to use them on his son before he calmed the father down.
He also said he saw signs of Thomas and Anthony Valva living in the garage a few months after he moved in and saw them in there with tents and sleeping bags weeks before Thomas Valva's death as he was dropping off Christmas gifts.
Concilio brought up another instance when he heard one of the boys knocking from the garage door saying he had to go to the bathroom. Rather than opening the door, he texted Polina because he was afraid of what she would do. He said, "I knew what the repercussions could be."
The defense says that the additional person in the home furthers their argument that Michael Valva did not think his son would die from the conditions he was living in.
