Hundreds of BMX riders between the ages of 3 and 65 from all over the world will compete in USA BMX's New England Nationals at Indian Ledge Park this weekend.

Those living in the area may have noticed RVs and campers with out-of-state license plates setting up shop the past few days too.

Families say the event is about making lifelong memories for kids.

"We've actually put like 20,000 miles this year on our RV traveling to different nationals and races," Lakeville resident Crystal Marks says. "We love the gathering of everyone."

Trumbull BMX track director Chris Gombos says he expects thousands of people to walk through the gates this weekend.

"This is the first year I've been getting a lot of emails from people in town who just want to come watch the races," Gombos says. "I think we're going to have a good spectator field this year."

Nearly 50 volunteers help make the event possible, Gombos says.

The not-for-profit track has made major upgrades recently, like new concrete turns, redesigned straights, and upgraded lighting and electrical systems.

"It's an honor to host this year. Not that many tracks get it," Gombos says. "Thirty tracks a year get it out of 160, so we're lucky."

USA BMX media manager Justin Wahl says Trumbull is a perfect spot to host the event.

"Trumbull is one of the OG of OG BMX tracks for sure," Wahl says. "The community out here in Trumbull, and the Northeast, is really special to us."

The event runs Friday through Sunday.
