Smoke-filled skies did not stop thousands of people from heading to downtown Patchogue Thursday evening for the latest Alive After Five celebration, even as air quality deteriorated throughout the day.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed from the moderate range earlier in the day to an unhealthy level by the evening, prompting health concerns, particularly for sensitive groups.

Despite the worsening conditions, businesses continued preparing for the popular summer street festival, and many attendees chose to enjoy the event as planned.

At Rumba, managers said they anticipated concerns about the smoky conditions and made accommodations for guests who wanted to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors.

“We have something to offer for everybody,” said Rumba manager Alex Arce. “Our third-floor rooftop bar also has an inside enclosed bar, so if you feel safe and you want to enjoy the outside weather, we do have those options as well.”

Anyone experiencing difficulty breathing or irritation should move indoors and monitor local air quality conditions before returning outside.
