A street sign in Merrick is now being renamed after an adored crossing guard who inspired others and kept his community safe, was struck by a car.

John Miro, a 70-year-old crossing guard and grandfather, served his community for three years before he was killed by an impaired driver this past winter.

In remembrance of his life, the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway will be renamed to John Miro Way.

"Holidays, rain, snow -- grandpa never took a day off,” his granddaughter said. “He remembered everyone's name and bought candy for the kids on Halloween. That is who my grandpa is. Selfless and kind to everyone he encountered."

Joshua Alvardo is facing manslaughter charges in connection to Miro’s death, police said.
