The last remaining boathouse along the Amityville River collapsed Monday night amid strong winds, bringing an end to a once-common feature of the town's waterfront.
The collapse follows another boathouse loss earlier this year, marking the end of an era along the Amityville River.
The structure, built in 1935, had stood for more than 90 years. Owner George Dodd said he tried to reinforce it a day earlier but expected it would not withstand the storm. Dodd says he does not plan to rebuild, adding it would be too costly.
Boathouses once lined the river, protecting wooden boats from rot and damage while they remained in the water year-round. The Amityville Historical Society has highlighted their significance as part of the village’s maritime heritage in its 2014 calendar.
