The arraignment of Matthew Smith, the 20‑year‑old accused of driving drunk in the crash that killed Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, is scheduled for Friday at the Suffolk County courthouse in Central Islip.

Smith is charged with driving while intoxicated following the Jan. 31 collision in St. James. Police say Smith allegedly ran a red light at Alexander Avenue and Route 347 around 6 a.m., striking Espinosa’s vehicle as she drove to work.

Earlier Thursday, hundreds gathered in Smithtown to pay their final respects to Espinosa at a packed funeral Mass held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church on East Main Street. Loved ones remembered her for her infectious smile, her compassion and her devotion to community and family.

She leaves behind her husband, Nassau County police officer Francisco Malaga and their daughter, Mia.
