A gas leak near the Davis Aircraft Products factory in Bohemia has been fully repaired after residents reported a lingering odor in the area over the past several weeks, according to National Grid.

Residents who shop and live near Walnut Avenue and Church Street said they began noticing the smell of gas weeks ago, but many were unsure of its source.

“You could smell it. I didn’t know it was a problem,” said Bohemia resident Gary Orlando.

National Grid said it first received calls about an odor in the area on Dec. 11. Crews responded and initially classified the issue as a Class 3 leak, which does not require immediate repairs under industry standards.

However, National Grid said colder temperatures on Tuesday may have exacerbated the situation, prompting crews to return. The leak was then reclassified as a Class 2 leak, which does require immediate repairs.

Concerned residents said the discovery was unsettling, especially given the proximity to homes and businesses.

“Gas leaks are scary, no matter the severity,” said Bohemia resident Lisa Marie Noxon. “I think they need to do their job and get it fixed immediately.”

The Bohemia Fire Department also responded to the scene. Assistant Fire Chief Scott Mistler said any gas odor should be treated seriously.

“If you smell gas, it’s not a normal thing, you’re not supposed to smell gas,” Mistler said. “If you do smell gas, it’s probably a leak. Whether it’s dangerous or not at that point, it’s best to call the fire department.”

National Grid said the gas leak was fully repaired Tuesday night.
