A home health aide was arrested earlier this month, accused of shaking the broken leg of a 96-year-old woman with dementia in Lawrence after she fell.

Marie Byron, 65, of Jamaica, Queens, was allegedly caught on camera aggressively shaking the victim's leg after she fell inside her home last Friday, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Byron worked as the woman's daytime health aide.

The incident came to light after the nighttime health aide arrived at the victim's home and noticed a laceration on her that was not there the previous day. The woman then complained of leg pain and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of a broken femur, police said.

After the injury was discovered, police said the victim's legal guardian watched camera footage from inside the home and observed the incident. Police said Byron did not call 911 and did not get the woman the appropriate medical attention.

Byron is charged with endangering the welfare of an elderly, incompetent and physically disabled person. She was arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
