Aria Moreno, a first-year medical student at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, volunteered to be a patient for her Point-of-Care Ultrasound course.

Amanda Aguilo-Cuadra, a radiology resident and alumni, conducted the abdominal ultrasound session.

Amanda noticed an abnormality while comparing Aria's kidneys.

Though Aria says she didn’t feel any unusual symptoms, she immediately followed up and learned that she had a 4 centimeter kidney stone and had lost 50% of her kidney function.

Aria has recovered and says she believes she was meant to be in the program and meant to find her future there.

The four-year program offers active learning by participating in simulations as a way to learn anatomy in real time.
