Centereach residents demand flooding issue be fixed one year after devastating storm

They say it's one year later and not enough has been done to fix the flooding issue on their road.

One year ago, Park Street in Centereach was filled with waist-high water that spilled into some homes.

Homeowners say they still deal with flooding on the roads, sometimes seeping into their houses during heavy rain.

Nicole Green says her house was destroyed during the August 2024 storm, and her family worries it will happen again.

"My kids having to get rescued on their father's back in waist-deep water, it's just we want the issue fixed," she said.

Neighbors say the block still floods from time to time.

"You're taking time off to get water out of your basement when it's coming in your house at the front door or in their case across the street it's in their house," said Michael Krauth, of Centereach.

"Every time we hear a report on rain, we're up for the night," said Bob Camardella, of Centereach.

Camardella says the August 2024 storm wasn't the first one to devastate his house.

"This is the third time that we've repaired our house, it's gotten ridiculous," he said.

The residents of Park Street say the Town of Brookhaven has been working on a project to keep the water away from their homes.

"They promised us they were going to do a sump on Hammond, run the pipes up from here from this sump to that sump," said Camardella.

"The only thing that we have seen so far that's been completed is that the wooded area has been taken down," said Krauth.

They say it's one year later and not enough has been done to fix the flooding issue on their road.

"We'd like to see the project that was promised to us that would be completed by 2025, if it's going to be held to that deadline," said Krauth.

News 12 reached out to the Town of Brookhaven to get an update on the sump project in Centereach and is waiting to hear back.
