Tracking Debby: Long Island

Tropical Storm Debby continues to track north and weaken and will pass just to the west of Long Island during the day on Saturday. Moderate to heavy rain will fall over Long Island from Friday into Saturday evening.

The local impacts to Long Island will include heavy rain, strong winds and coastal concerns of beach erosion and coastal flooding.

Rain totals on average will be 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts which could lead to street and basement flooding.

Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, and with soaked ground trees could fall leading to scattered power outages.

A strong southerly wind will produce 6-to-12-foot waves and dangerous swimming conditions along the South Shore on Saturday. This combined with the strong wind gusts will lead to beach erosion and some coastal flooding.

The storm will move into Maine on Sunday, leaving Long Island will a partly sunny Sunday with highs in the 80s.
