New bill seeks to expand state law that requires victims’ families be notified of media deals with perpetrator of a crime
Under state law, victims’ families must be notified anytime a media deal is in the works that results in profits for the perpetrator of the crime. State Sen. Kevin Thomas is looking to expand the law for relatives of the criminals as well.

A Long Island lawmaker is trying to make it harder for some families of convicted felons to profit off their relative’s crimes, including Rex Heuermann’s family.
Under state law, victims’ families must be notified anytime a media deal is in the works that results in profits for the perpetrator of the crime.
However, state Sen. Kevin Thomas is looking to expand the law for relatives of the criminals as well.
Sen. Thomas tells News 12 he started looking into making the change after learning the wife of the Gilgo Beach suspect signed a $1 million deal for a documentary.
The law would also cover former spouses of criminals, and protect the rights of victims’ families to bring a civil case to recover money damages.
