WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Potential coastal storm could turn into Ophelia later today or tomorrow morning.

  • COASTAL EFFECTS: High risk of rip currents, small craft advisory, and a gale watch are currently in effect.

  • IMPACTS: Expect a wet and windy weekend. The first round of rain arrives Saturday morning into the afternoon with east winds 15 to 30 mph. Chance for minor coastal flooding in vulnerable areas. Depending on wind directors some spots that typically flood could see moderate flooding at high tide. We get a break late Saturday before another round of showers arrives on Sunday.

Tropical Weekend Washout

News 12 Storm Watch Team Meteorologist Addison Green says a coastal storm, off the coastal waters of South Carolina, is forecasted to head up the coast and bring rain, wind and rough surf to the tri-state area with Long Island potentially getting hit hard. He says the storm has a good chance of becoming a tropical depression, then storm, before it comes ashore in North Carolina by Friday evening.

The storm will start to bring an increase in cloud cover through Friday, as well as gusty winds. Through Saturday, rainfall will go from light to heavy, with the worst of it from 8 a.m. to 2p.m. The winds will increase to 20-35 mph with gusts higher than that at times. The storm will move off to the east overnight into Sunday. Rain will continue to come down, scattered at times with breezy winds. The entire system moves away through the first half of Monday.

Wave heights could be 3-7 feet. Rip currents will be a huge issue. Coastal flooding will also be a concern, especially during the high tides.
