Two firefighters were injured by a hit-and-run driver outside a Uniondale fire station Thursday, officials say.

News 12 is told the firetruck was returning to the Van Ness Fire Station on Uniondale Avenue and had activated flashing red traffic lights directing vehicles to stop.

Officials say a female driver in a grey 2021 Mercedes-Benz G30 refused to stop and struck two firefighters.

A 48-year-old firefighter suffered a leg injury and a 20-year-old firefighter suffered back injury.

Fire officials tell News 12 they are taking the matter very seriously.

“I would say people need to proceed with caution when they see first responders,” says Uniondale Fire Chief Jessica Ellerbe.

Ellerbe says the two firefighters are lucky they did not suffer more severe injuries.

Nassau County police are searching for the hit-and-run driver.
