Tax Day is Tuesday, April 18. If you haven’t filed your 2022 income taxes yet, News 12 has tips for those needing last-minute tax guidance and advice.
Accountant Nicole Derosa says filing an extension is an option. However, she says it’s not necessarily that simple – extensions don’t change anything if you owe money.
“The IRS wants their money by tomorrow. So, if you cannot file on time, estimate your income and your tax liability as best as you possibly can. Generally speaking, we like to use the prior year, if nothing really changed too much, that’s usually a good benchmark,” DeRosa said.
Something new for the 2022 tax filing year is a college tax credit for in-state college students. Also, both homeowners and renters can take advantage of deductions. DeRosa says it’s also important to note that both renters and New Jersey Homeowners can benefit from property tax deductions.
“New Jersey does allow you a $15,000 property tax deduction,” DeRosa says “If you rent, 18% of your rent is actually considered property taxes as well. So, make sure that you are factoring that into your New Jersey tax return.”
