Two Long Islanders were arraigned Monday afternoon in connection to a fight that led to the assault of an officer.
Police say the officer saw a large group of men fighting on Main Street in Farmingdale outside of Burgerology around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
When the officer attempted to break up the fight, 23-year-old Jorge Ramirez Canales allegedly punched him above the right eye and resisted arrest.
The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been released.
Officials say another man involved, 23-year-old Jamal Beverly, was found unconscious a short distance away with a substance believed to be cocaine allegedly in his possession.
Beverly was released without bail. Ramirez Canales posted $5,000 cash bail.
Those familiar with the community say they were surprised.
"I have never seen anything crazy out here, it's chill and everybody likes to come out and go to the restaurants," says Alex Cannova, of Lindenhurst.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman says he is adding additional resources to the police department to prevent incidents like this.
"We have intensified patrols, we have more officers, we have an academy right now," Blakeman says. "We are spending money on technology, equipment, we are doing everything necessary to protect the people of Nassau County."
An officer was also punched Friday in Oceanside and is off duty because of injuries to his eye.
