A 19-year-old Smithtown man and a 72-year-old from New York City are dead after a head-on crash in Ulster County, according to New York State Police.

Troopers said they responded Sunday to a two-car crash on Route 28 in the town of Olive.

Officials say Peter Bonenfant was driving a Chevrolet westbound when, for unknown reasons, he crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz driven by Philip F. Jacobus.

Bonenfant was extricated from his vehicle and transported for medical treatment, but succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Jacobus was taken to a hospital in Kingston before being transferred to another medical facility, where he also later died from his injuries.
