Fifteen members of the Nassau Police Department were promoted to first grade detective Tuesday.
It was the first time the designation has ever been used.
Fourteen members were already detectives and one was a police officer. Those promoted include Detective Gary Ferrucci of Homicide, who has 51 years on the job, Detective George Colby, of the Gang Squad, and police officer Kenneth Baribault.
Baribault was struck by drunk driver in May of 2008 on the Long Island Expressway. He is in wheelchair because of the accident.
Baribault received his shield and certificate via Zoom, since he is quarantining because someone in his immediate family is sick.
The promotion to first grade detective was negotiated with the detectives union. Members must have at least 10 years of service on job and apply for the promotion.
The promotions come with a pay increase, as well as the new title. Under a previous contract, police officers who became detectives would only receive a $2,400 pay raise, making the increased workload not desirable for many.
