A total of $1.3 billion in federal funding was secured to repair the East River Tunnel which corroded during Superstorm Sandy.
It connects the Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak and New Jersey Transit to Penn Station.
According to Sen. Charles Schumer, had the money not been secured, Amtrak was going to have to close each track for two years to fully fix them.
“To have it closed down would've been terrible. Now, all 453 trains will run on schedule. So every commuter who goes to work every day, every mom who goes into the city with their kids to show them a museum or something, breathe a sigh of relief," Schumer said.
The money will come from the infrastructure bill.
