The annual "Walk to Recovery" brought residents together in Islip on Saturday to raise awareness about addiction and mental health during Recovery Awareness Month.
The Town of Islip and Islip Goes Purple hold the walk to raise awareness of mental health, substance abuse disorder, addiction and overdose. Organizers say they hope to support people and families going through difficult times.
"It's very important that we shine the light on these stories of families that lost somebody and just kind of bring hope and a little bit of inspiration to anybody that might be struggling or going through it," said Herbie Medina, co-founder of Uplift Our Towns. "Letting them know that recovery is possible."
The 'Islip Goes Purple Initiative' continues throughout the rest of the month.
