A Deer Park father has found a special way to remember the two sons he lost in the terror attacks of Sept. 11.
Both of John Vigiano Sr.?s sons perished at Ground Zero. His boys, John and Joe, were both responding with their units to the attacks. John, an FDNY firefighter, and Joe, an NYPD detective, were Vigiano?s only children.
Vigiano says friends and colleagues of his sons helped ease his pain by sharing their memories of John and Joe with him while he kept vigil at the site, waiting for their remains to be found. The father asked to have the stories written down and sent to him. He says hundreds of responses began pouring in.
?Most of them were pretty humorous,? says Vigiano. ?Some were pretty sad. But for the most part they were great because they were typical of what my sons were doing.?
In an effort to preserve his sons? memories, Vigiano took the stories and had them bound into two books, ?Joe?s Story? and ?John?s Story.? A small number of copies were made and presented to family members, particularly the grandchildren whose fathers were taken from them. Vigiano says he will never allow the books to be published for profit or public viewing.
?The boys' legacy is there,? says the father. ?They were conscientious. They were good fathers, good husbands and they were great sons.?
