Police say a 34-year-old male employee died in a crush of shoppers at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream Friday morning.
According to detectives, Queens resident Jdimytai Damour suffered an undetermined death when shoppers knocked him to the ground of the Wal-Mart. The man was transported to the hospital where he died around 6 a.m. His exact cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner.Police describe the scene as "utter chaos." When fellow Wal-Mart workers tried to help Damour, they were shoved and pushed by customers, as were police when they arrived.
Damour's union is asking for a full investigation into what they call Wal-Mart's failure to provide a safe workplace. Police are combing surveillance video of shoppers and not ruling out criminal charges.
Wal-Mart issued a statement calling the event "unfortunate," but saying it did have extra security guards in place because of the large crowds.
Police say a 28-year-old pregnant woman, as well as three other shoppers, were injured at the mall and taken to hospitals.
