Police are on the hunt for the driver who fatally struck a woman in Miller Place and fled the scene.
Police say Tracy Mangino, 40, was walking on North Country Road near Block Island Drive at around 11 p.m. Saturday when she was run down.
Authorities say Mangino was taken to Mather Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators say the vehicle that struck the woman was a commercial box truck. Neighbors say a group of young people walking not far behind Mangino was able to give police a description of the vehicle.
Chief John Drews, of the Sound Beach Fire Department, spoke with News 12 today, saying, "In my opinion, there's no way that [the driver] didn't know they hit this person."
Drews, who has been with the fire department for more than 20 years, says it's the third or fourth pedestrian accident to happen in the area, where cars often speed and there isn't much room for joggers and walkers.
Neighbors say Mangino grew up in Miller Place and was struck just feet away from her house. They say she leaves behind a teenage daughter.
Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is urged to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
